Plenary Session: The Paradox of Plenty - Challenging the Assumption That More is Better
Moderator: D. Joshua Cutler, MD, Director, Maine Quality Forum
Eliott Fisher MD, MPH - Director, Center for Health Policy Research, Dartmouth Medical School
Using data from the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, a compendium of national and regional information on the performance of the U.S. health care system, Dr. Fisher will examine often-held assumptions that more care is better, and that more resources are needed to improve our healthcare system. This data-driven approach will challenge attendees to examine these assumptions to better identify what is needed to drive improvements in care in Maine. |

Eliott Fisher MD, MPH - Director, Center for Health Policy Research, Dartmouth Medical School
Dr. Fisher will discuss approaches to improving the cost and quality of care through delivery system reform, focusing on three broad areas - fostering the development of integrated delivery systems around existing local care systems; refocusing performance measurement on longitudinal costs and health outcomes; and approaches to physician and institutional provider payment reform that include shared savings models. He will present examples of regional data that show how this model can be used locally to measure and report quality, outcomes, and cost. |
