Doctor of the Day Registration

YOUR PRESENCE AT THE MAINE LEGISLATURE IS A CRITICAL ELEMENT OF MMA’S GRASSROOTS ADVOCACY PROGRAM. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO CONTINUE OUR PRESENCE AND TO ENSURE THE CONTINUED SUCCESS OF THIS PROGRAM

During the 1996 legislative session, the presiding officers of the Maine Legislature asked the Maine Medical Association and the Maine Osteopathic Association to furnish a physician for each legislative day to assist in the event of a medical emergency. Since then, the Doctor of the Day program has become a well-established and highly respected service. This is a unique opportunity to observe the legislative process in action and to visit lawmakers. The program also gives your child(ren) a chance to observe their government in action by serving as an honorary page.  Upon receipt of your registration, MMA staff will contact you to arrange a convenient date for you to serve. The House Clerk’s office will then send you a confirmation letter and parking pass. On the day of your participation, a Maine Medical Association representative will meet you at the State House and will be available to orient you to the State House and guide you through the legislative activities of the day. If you have any questions regarding the Doctor of the Day program, please feel free to contact the MMA staff: Sarah Lepoff at slepoff@mainephysicians.org.  We hope to see you at the State House for what is expected to be a very interesting session for the medical community!

Volunteering as the Doctor of the Day will give you a better sense of our legislators’ perception of the medical profession, the importance of developing a relationship with your legislators, and an opportunity to promote the medical profession among the state’s leaders. MMA works diligently to secure a Doctor of the Day for each day the legislature is in session.

The Doctor of the Day is responsible for responding to any health care issues that arise among legislators, staff, or the public. When you are confirmed as Doctor of the Day, State House staff will mail you a confirmation letter with detailed arrival information and a parking permit. You will need to arrive at the State House by 9 am. If you have additional questions prior to participating, do not hesitate to contact the MMA staff.
